I just barely glanced at this list, but saw enough to chill my blood! “Fascinating Womanhood” should be recommended as a companion choice to “Escape”. It’s a sickeningly subservient collection of “advice” on how to turn yourself into a phony of incredible shallowness and -sorry- silliness. Written by a Mormon during some prehistoric age, it will at least give you a momentous case of giggles.
I had already read two or three others, but the majority would give me-a feminist-the heebie-jeebies.

Hi Renee,

thank you for this great recommended books. I will check them all out
by the way, i just thought I’d share this. I’ve read “Living in the light” by Shakti Gawain. It is an amazing book. it is about embracing our different selves (including masculine and feminine energy inside every single one of us) instead of being one dimensional. there’s a great chapter in that book about how to balance our inner feminine and masculine qualities. I believe that Polarity creates attraction….but at the same time it could also create frictions and unhealthy dependence between a man and woman.
without inner female qualities, a man would be machine-like, unemotional, totally in control etc….and the interesting thing is….maybe this case is different for women. these days women become more macho and masculine and they deny and suppress her feminine energy. this leaves women helpless, and express her feminine power only indirectly through manipulation) i am a believer that in a relationship, we are meant to share our wholeness, instead of expecting a person to validate and or make us whole. It’s also about balancing healthy Independence and closeness or intimacy

I love book lists! Thanks for compiling this.
“Fathers and Sons” (sometimes translated as Fathers and Children) by Ivan Turgenev is a beautiful, bittersweet little book (it’s only about 150 pages) with a lot of heart. It takes place in Russia in the mid to late 1800s. I dont want to give too much away, but I’ll say that Turgenev is a very gifted observer and his characters feel vividly alive. Plus, it has conflict of generation, family, nature, life, love, OH and an interesting portrayal of different women and femininity.

I agree with Ms Summer. Jane Austen is so great to read! And there are lots of fantastic men in them. My favourite is dashing Captain Wentworth from ‘Persuasion’!
) Maybe you have to be the Anne-type of person to love her that much, but I am so glad to have had these books inspire me when all my friends were starting off on their drug careers and partying hard.
Actually, the books that inspired and challenged me most to be a Lady and not go with the flow of society were the Anne of Green Gables Series by Lucy Maud Montgomery. I just love Anne, I believe she has been one of the most influential figures of my youth (and still – as I’m only 22.
By the way, I really really like your site, Renée!

Thanks Sara
thanks for your recommendations too – as a literary student in the past, I have an affinity for the classics.

Ms Summer
Writing from England, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ (Jane Austen) and ‘A Room with a View’ (E. M. Forster) might also be nice for some classical fiction.
